Bone density testing

Bone densitometry examines bone mineral density. DXA is the most common method, but other methods exist. Bone testing serves a different purpose from analysing fat and fat-free mass.

When you are looking for a bone examination

Bone density testing helps assess osteoporosis and fracture risk and monitor treatment. If you are worried about your bone health, talk to a doctor. They can help you choose an examination that suits your circumstances.

Have a referral or recommendation? Use it when booking to check that the provider offers the examination you need. If the method or body region is unclear, ask for clarification before making the appointment.

DXA, QCT and ultrasound are different

DXA, also called DEXA, commonly measures bone density at the lumbar spine and hip. Another option is QCT, which uses computed tomography. Check which method your chosen provider uses.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS), usually at the heel, assesses other properties of bone and can contribute to fracture risk assessment. It is not interchangeable with bone DXA and is not used to monitor the effects of osteoporosis treatment. A screening offer should therefore not automatically replace the examination you were referred for.

If you also want to know about fat and fat-free mass, ask about DXA body composition analysis. This is a separate service that not every bone densitometry clinic offers.

What happens during bone DXA

For DXA of the lumbar spine or hip, you lie on an open examination table. The operator helps you into position for the area being scanned. You need to keep still during the test. When booking, ask how long the visit will take and when you will receive your results.

Ask for preparation instructions before your visit, and mention possible pregnancy or a recent examination involving contrast material. Check what to wear to avoid metal fastenings and what to do if you take calcium supplements. Discuss any changes to your treatment with your doctor.

Understanding your bone density results

Your report may show BMD, meaning bone mineral density. A T-score compares it with values for young adults, while a Z-score uses an age-matched reference. Your doctor will explain which assessment is appropriate for you and what the result means alongside your health and other risk factors. The number alone cannot predict whether you will have a fracture.

Keep the report and take it to your next appointment, especially if you go to a different provider. It will help them assess whether the results can be compared. Discuss with your doctor when it would be useful to repeat the examination.

Referrals, prices and booking conditions

Choose DXA / bone densitometry on the map and look for a provider listing bone densitometry. If the method is not shown, ask about it before booking.

Check whether you need a referral and whether your insurance covers the examination in your circumstances. If you are paying yourself, ask for the total cost of the bone examination, including the report and any consultation.

  • Does the provider accept your referral, and are other documents required?
  • Which method and body region are included?
  • What is the total cost if you pay for the examination yourself?
  • When, how and to whom will the report be delivered?

Common questions

Is all bone densitometry DXA?

No. QCT is another method. For ultrasound offers, it is important to distinguish their purpose and limitations; different methods are not automatically interchangeable.

Do I need a referral?

Ask your chosen provider before booking. At the same time, check insurance coverage or the price if you will be paying for the examination yourself.

Does bone densitometry also measure body composition?

Not automatically. Analysis of fat and fat-free mass requires the appropriate separate service, even if the same provider can offer it.

What if I have an older result from another provider?

Bring the full report and ask whether the results can be compared. The method and body region matter as well as the score itself.
