DXA body composition analysis

DXA body composition analysis distinguishes fat, lean soft tissue and bone mineral. It is a different service from a routine bone density examination, even though the same device may support both. DXA and DEXA refer to the same method.

What a DXA body composition scan tells you

When booking, explain that you want a body composition test to assess fat and fat-free mass. Look for body composition analysis in the list of services. A clinic that offers bone densitometry may not offer this test.

DXA uses X-rays. Depending on the scan coverage and software, you receive whole-body and regional results. These include fat and lean soft tissue. Lean soft tissue includes more than muscle, and its amount does not tell you your muscle strength.

Ask what your report will include and whether you will also receive a breakdown by body region. A sample report on the manufacturer’s website may differ from what your chosen provider supplies.

How it differs from BIA and bone testing

BIA estimates body composition from electrical impedance, while DXA uses X-rays. To choose between them, consider which results you want to follow, whether you have earlier measurements and who will help you understand the new results.

Bone densitometry focuses on bone mineral density. If you want to check your bones as well as body composition, arrange both examinations in advance. They may differ in scope, price and how the results are assessed.

The scan and what to discuss beforehand

Illustration of a person lying on their back with legs extended on an open DXA table, with the scanning arm above the body.

You lie on an examination table while the operator helps you into position for the scan. When booking, ask what to wear and how much time to allow. If you need to check the table’s size or weight limit, do so before your visit.

Tell the provider before booking if you are pregnant or might be pregnant: DXA body composition testing is not performed during pregnancy. Also report recent examinations involving contrast material. The provider should determine the necessary interval and preparation for your circumstances.

  • Confirm that you are booking body composition testing and which body regions will be assessed.
  • Request instructions about food, activity, clothing and arrival time.
  • Find out whether the report and consultation are included and who will explain the results.

Understanding results and follow-up scans

Your report will show values in kilograms or percentages and may include a breakdown by body region. Ask someone to walk you through the different entries. For example, lean soft tissue and fat-free mass including bone mineral are different values.

Keep the full report for future comparisons. Bring it with you if you change providers: results from different systems may not be directly comparable. Agree on another appointment according to what you want to follow over time.

Finding the service and comparing prices

On the map, look in the DXA / bone densitometry group. Check that your chosen provider lists DXA body composition testing; some locations only offer bone examinations.

Before booking, ask for the price of body composition analysis and whether an explanation of your results is included. Check whether you need a referral. If you also want a bone examination, arrange its booking and price separately.

Common questions

Are DXA and DEXA different?

They are two abbreviations used for the same method. What matters is the type and scope of the examination you book.

Will a bone density appointment also give me body fat percentage?

Not automatically. Body composition analysis is a separate service; the provider needs to confirm availability and price.

Does lean mass mean muscle mass?

It is not muscle alone. The report needs to distinguish lean soft tissue from any values that also include bone mineral.

What should I check before booking?

Confirm that you are booking body composition analysis, which regions will be measured and what the price includes. Also ask about preparation, any referral requirement and help understanding your results.
